Stored objects deliver exotic memories
We had a busy and somewhat emotional holiday weekend sorting through much neglected stored possessions.
Helped by old cookery books, lovely verdigris garden candle holders, and lace tablecloths we recalled shared meals in candlelit gardens, under starry, tropical skies from a much travelled past.
We discovered long forgotten treasures, briefly reliving family holidays making Mr Lazy’s Lemonade from the stained pages of The Mr Men Cookbook.
A small ebony carving brought memories flooding back of the magic and excitement of seeing the ‘big five’, elephant, rhinoceros, buffalo, leopard, and lion and the smaller but no less significant rock hyrax and tiny dikdiks in the Serengeti. Remembering too, the fish eagles, small sunbirds and the lively, social weaver birds with their wonderful intricate nests, living in their own cities in the trees! We visited many game parks regularly over the years and their wild occupants never ceased to amaze and thrill.
The reader may view this with some cynicism and disbelief and dismiss it as romantic tosh … of course there were mosquitoes, creepy-crawlies and very scary happenings, but we like to remember the best bits and they were fantastic!

A wonderful discovery of a silver rickshaw presented as a leaving gift in Bangladesh.
