Wooooo… photoshoot tomorrow

A clean studio

Just a quick note. Tomorrow I have  an interview for a local magazine and a photographer is coming to take some pictures of the workshop. I have just spent the hardest afternoon of recent years cleaning up. In fact it all looks so smart, that it is now officially a studio, rather than a workshop (or to be totally honest -  a garage).

I even had time to add a few more inches to the latest rug, but now I think that I’d better leave everything in case I get it disarrayed! This is the “rug from scratch” from earlier blogs, I’m using up handspun in white, grey, black and brown. This style of weave is called Krokbragd but I’d forgotten how slow it is to weave, so I may not be able to offer rugs in this style at a reasonable price. I have enough warp on the loom for 2 small rugs and a full size one, so I shall try out a broken twill weave next and see if that is any faster. It should be able to make similar small patterns. The final rug, will be either of these 2 weaves, or a plain weave (since I need to know how fast I can weave that style).

More on the Crinkle Scarf-On and Off the Loom

A few photos of the progress of the crinkle scarf, showing the open weave structure, some slight contraction on removal from the loom, and the finished effect after washing and drying.

NEW! Fresh from the loom!

At last the new Spectrum scarves are ready and up on the site! Although the weave structure and design are the same as for the Crinkle scarves, the finished effect is a complete contrast, due to the light bright colours used and the slightly different behaviour of the wool yarn on washing and finishing.

Campaign for Wool

The Campaign for Wool is a coalition of key organisations in the wool industry working together to raise awareness of Wool

You can follow it on Twitter https://twitter.com/#!/Campaignforwool or Facebook http://www.facebook.com/thecampaignforwool
As part of this campaign, a group has been formed to produce from British Wool, a cushion for each athlete in GB Olymic squad. It’s called the Woolsack project http://www.woolsack.org/  and when I manage to clear current work off the loom, I hope to start weaving up some shetland wool from fleeces donated by a flock master near Buxton, spun by members of the Clwyd Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers.

I also pledge that my next rug will be completely made from British Wool even though this currently means that it’ll be handspun so that I know exactly where it came from (for example, the dark brown is Swarbles fleece from Wales)
