Abinger Stained Glass
The Home of Stained Glass in The Heart of The Surrey Hills
Thanks for popping in today, my name is Amanda Winfield and I run and own a stained glass workshop called Abinger Stained Glass. Set at the foot of the Surrey Hills in Abinger Hammer, my workshop has become a little hive of glassy activity. Lots of commissioned work flows through the studio where I create windows and panels for homes and businesses throughout the UK and Europe.
About Me.
Glass excites me. Glass thrills me. Glass is my drug!
In 1982 I was attending Chelsea School of Art in London. I was on, what was then, a new mixed media course, Mural Design and Public Art. We were introduced to many different techniques and media but it was the stained glass that really grabbed me.
I was then lucky to be given a position at Goddard and Gibbs studios in London where I continued my training and after 10 years I became their studio manager.
In 2002 I left my work in London to pursue a solo career in stained glass. Having grown up in the country I was keen to get back there and leave the city behind, maybe age and children has something to do with this! My present workshop looks over the rolling Surrey Hills and everyday the light and colours change. This is so inspiring for me and I use this inspiration in my work.
Light passing through coloured glass can completely change a room and that’s what I love to exploit in my present work. I eagerly combine traditional stained glass techniques with my own hand made contemporary fused glass pieces. Like a painter would use their palette of paints, I am painting and moulding with light.
I create panels and windows for homes and businesses in the UK and Europe. This allows me to design and make stained glass in a wide variety of styles and that is really enjoyable.
And do I still love glass after all these years?
Oh yes, more than ever!
