Courses In Glass
Abinger Stained Glass studio nestles in the beautiful countryside of the Surrey Hills at Abinger Hammer, Surrey.
With extensive views over the landscape from the workshop, and a very warm welcome, it is a wonderful retreat where learning the art and craft of stained glass is carried out in an informal and inspiring atmosphere.
It is hard to become a master of the art and craft of stained glass, 25yrs and I'm still learning! The aim of our courses is to give you a creative fun day as we teach you the basic skills required to make a leaded panel. Glass cutting, leading up and soldering. These may take years to perfect - but in a day you will make something lovely, however blobby your solder may be!
Kirstie Allsopp at Abinger Stained Glass.
In the spring of 2009 Kirstie Allsopp came to Abinger Stained Glass and made a stained glass panel for her Channel 4 Series "Kirsties Homemade Home". I was really chuffed to be invited to be part of series 2 of Kirsties Homemade Home and that will be aired later in 2010.
We have several different courses available:
Stained Glass
This course introduces you to the craft of making leaded panels. You can choose from a selection of loads of patterns here or come with your own simple design. We will start the day by producing your full size working drawing called a cutline. You will learn how to cut glass cut and bend lead, lead the panel together and finally soldering the joints with a traditional gas soldering iron. We will instruct you in the final cementing and polishing process. The piece you make will be approx A4 size or equivalent with a maximum of approximately 15 pieces. Copper foiling, Tiffany style work, can be carried on the stained glass day too, just let me know if that’s what you would prefer to do.
The Next Step
Two day courses creating your own Glass Art
This two day course is designed for those who have already attended my one day stained glass course or similar elsewhere. Before you come you will need to produce your original full size art work. I will help you through this important process if you need help! A bit of homework is essential before coming! Once here we will create our cutline from your drawing. The size of panel you can make is around A3. You will have an introduction into glass painting and the use of fused glass within your piece if required. Acid etching can also produce some interesting effects. I will guide, aid and inspire you through the process of completing your own stained glass art work.
Fusing Taster Day, Plate making
This is a great introduction to the world of glass fusing. This craft has had resurgence in the last 20 years but has been around for 3000 years. We will discuss the properties of glass and compatibility (the chant of the glass fuser!) We will explore the different effects that can be achieved using glass frits, powders and inclusions of metals. You will be taught how to cut sheet glass, how to assemble the glass and how to fire it to create panels or vessels, such as bowls or plates. It’s so satisfying to actually make a useful object that you will keep always. We can get really creative with fusible glass. In short we will have fun!
Your finished items can either be posted on to you (cost by weight) or will be ready for collection after firing.
